Itinerary

Day 1 – Cuzco – Cancha Cancha

You will depart from your Cusco Hotel at 5:00 am with our private vehicle towards Huaran, located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and the starting point of your trek. You will hike for approximately 6 hours, uphill through the lush vegetation of the valley, stopping for lunch, this will be your first campsite in Cancha Cancha, a small agricultural community in the middle of the Andes. Once there, you will set up camp and then meet some of the locals and find out about their way of life.

Day 2 – Cancha Cancha – Lake Queuñaqocha

After a healthy breakfast, you will break camp and climb to the first pass of the trek, Abra Pachacutec (4400 m /14,432ft) You will be hiking 4 hours till this spot that will offer you awesome views of glacier lakes and snow-capped mountains, like Mount Colquecruz, Mount Minas, and Mount Sirijuani. Once over the pass, you will stop for lunch and afterwards begin the descent to the village of Quiswarani, passing through a Queuña tree forest and Polylepis srubs which are home to such endangered birds as the Royal Cinclodes, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant, and Cucarachero Inca. There will be a short break once you reach the village, and then you begin ascending until reaching the beautiful Lake Queuñaqocha, where you will spend the night under a starry sky.

Day 3 – Lake Queuñaqocha – Lares

From Lake Queuñaqocha the route ascends to the second mountain pass, Abra Willkiccasa (4100 m / 13,448 ft), You will be hiking 2 hours till this spot, this time offering you spectacular views of Mount Colquecruz and Mount Pitusiray. The trail cuts through the ever-changing Puna grasslands and passes by lakes and farmland, with wild deer roaming about. After another 3 hours of hiking you arrive in Cuncani, another small agricultural community from where you will descend into a green, fertile valley, full of crops and small communities. Along the way, you will find yourself flabbergasted at the variety of native flowers, such as begonias and wild orchids. After another 2.5 hours of hiking you will arrive in Lares, capital of the Lares district, whose number one attraction is its hot springs, where will we spend the night.

Day 4 – Lake Queuñaqocha – Lares

After breakfast, you will be transferred with our private vehicle to the city of Ollantaytambo, an ancient Inca town where we will visit the famous archaeological ruins built in the 1400s. The large Inca fortress, also known as Temple Hill and the Temple of the Sun have one of the biggest monolithic stones in the Cusco region which soar above the town’s cobbled streets. Ancient symbol-like marks in relief still adorn these huge stones. The complex also includes a stepped terrace as well as an area known as the Princess Baths, where ceremonial bathing took place.

After the tour you will have lunch in the town of Ollantaytambo and after board the Expedition train departing at 15:20 that will take you to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival you will have the evening free to explore Aguas Calientes on your own. You will spend the night in a Hotel.

Day 5 – Machu Picchu / Cusco

After an early breakfast, a Shuttlebus will take you to the Machu Picchu archeological site, where you immediately begin a 2.5-hour guided tour of the entire Incan outpost.After the guided tour, you can explore the remainder of the citadel on your own and enjoy your time at this world’s spiritual center with its carved stairways made of stone. You should take your time and enjoy the pure delight of the moment.  Additional hikes need to be booked 3 to 5 months in advance as these depend on availability! these hikes need to be paid for in advance at booking!

  • If chosen in advance you can climb (Huayna Picchu ($75US per person)) or (Machu Picchu Mountain ($75US per person)) to appreciate the beauty and magnificence of Machu Picchu and the valleys below from a higher viewpoint.
  • Other activities in Aguas Calientes include a visit to the local museum or to the hot springs on your own. (entrance fees required and time permitting)

After your visit, you will descend to Aguas Calientes have a leisurely lunch on your own, and later board the Expedition train which departs at 4:22 pm for the return trip to Cusco stopping at the Ollantaytambo train station where our driver will be waiting for you for your return trip to Cusco. You will be back in Cusco by 20:30 approximately depending on traffic.
